What is Home Heating Oil?

Home heating oil or Heating oil is a refined oil made from petroleum, used in furnaces to heat buildings. It is the main source of heat in about 8.1 million American homes. People living in the northeast US are more likely to heat their homes with heating oil than other parts of the country, consuming more than 80% of the home heating oil used every winter.

Also known as No. 2 fuel oil, heating oil is very similar to diesel and kerosene, in fact it is often confused as being similar or identical. Heating oil is commonly delivered by tank truck to residential, commercial and municipal buildings and stored in tanks either above or below ground.
